The Religion Of The Indians Of California A L Kroeber 9781161701289 Books
Kroeber's account of "Californian" religion is a bit brief considering it is supposed to encompass the entire state; it's more than clear even to a casual reader that his experience was largely limited to those nations with whom he had spent the most time when he wrote it. And as with all of Kroeber's writings, there is some uneasy tension between his (I think) genuinely good intentions and the casual racism of his day where California Indians were concerned. You should certainly read it if you are interested in the subject, especially if your interest is in the far north of the state - the sections on the Hupa and Karok nations are the fullest. About south-central and southern California this book is not to be trusted. But keep in mind in all cases that Kroeber and his contemporaries at Berkeley were cultural outsiders, and their views were circumscribed by some very flawed anthropological theories. His notions of what California religion must be are tainted by his belief that he was studying a "primitive" society, and often borrow more from early anthropological ideas about things like shamanism and totemism in other parts of the world than they do with anything his informants would have told them about their ritual calendars and supernatural encounters.Product details

truly great book
Wow this was interesting and a subject I always wanted to look into being part Digger Indian from SF Ca myself.
Publisher could have used larger print. I would not call this 'First Rate Publishing'. Attaching photos for reference.
